We are always interested in hearing from people who feel they have something to contribute towards either the President’s Fund Raising Committee (PFRC) or the Welfare Committee. The PFRC meets every three months. The remit of the PFRC is to oversee all the national fund raising events, including their format, content and cost, and to come up with new fund raising ideas. The Committee also liaises with the trade in gathering funds in support of Caravan.

The Welfare Committee also meets on a quarterly basis, and its remit is to support the Chairman of Welfare, the Director of Welfare and the Welfare Assessors in their respective roles. It oversees all aspects of Caravan’s welfare policy including endorsing and recording all applications for assistance for relief from the fund; agreeing on levels of financial and other assistance provided to beneficiaries; reviewing the criteria for eligibility as and when necessary; keeping abreast of changes in legislation and issues; and agreeing on new policies and ensuring that existing policies are consistent.

Brian Green, pensioner welfare manager from the Co-operative Group joined the Welfare Committee four years ago. He is also a welfare assessor in the Manchester area. “It is unfortunate that there is a need for benevolent funds in this day and age, but since joining the committee my eyes have been opened as to the amount of poverty there is,” he says. “My part is only very small but I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping others.”
